Language, like religion, can inflict tremendous violence by forcing definition in terms of binaries and generalities. Language can also do immense good when words are judiciously chosen and effectively delivered. In this we can be understood and further motivated to see ourselves as part of a bigger story.
Writing to me is about moving through obstacles and establishing a trajectory inward, moving by way of intensities into more and more revealing territory to know and be known. It is an active practice informed by my training as a social movement chaplain, a dramaturg, and an archivist. In the act of writing and editing, sustainability is centered as a process of discovery where one is peeling layers, burning through confusion to find questions.
However, my writing is not about less; it's about everything that has already been left behind that can be rediscovered and reimagined, considering how the context of eternity helps construct attractive and viable systems. To bore holes in language, to see what lurks behind it, gives us the power to be something or nothing just by looking deeply.
My approach to working in the theater involves a deep consideration of human bodies and their emotional/intellectual output as the central material for live performance. This has been fortified as I’ve further developed expertise in arts and medicine. Liveness has unprecedented value in an era where human connection is increasingly diluted and absent. I hope to channel my love of storytelling and dialogue equally towards all the work I am involved in, no matter the medium or my position.
